New Classes and Seminars

It's been way too long since we've updated this page!

We have some exciting classes and events in October for you.  On the 7th we tried to hold a star gazing event with Hank Baronsky from the Rochester Astronomy Club.  Hank showed up along with numerous people anxious to check out the stars.  Unfortunately, the clouds and the rain also showed up.  We will try to reschedule in the very near future.  Check back often to see when.  On the 14th, we are kicking off our new series of history classes called "History in Your Backyard".  Harvey Limbeck, local resident and Ganondagan docent, stops in to discuss the Iroquois Confederacy and the culture and history within it.  Seats are filling fast so reserve your spot ASAP.  There are many other cool classes and events coming up.  If you're in the library, grab an Events Calendar at the front desk or if you're in front of your computer, click on the Calendar of Events link from the main library page.  We have a full load of events through the end of the year.

Check back here often.  Hopefully I'll remember to update it on a regular basis!

Summer Reading Begins!

Our summer reading program for adults begins today, June 29(can you believe it's the end of June already?).  If you haven't signed up, you still can.  In fact, you can sign up any time you want.  But don't wait, as the later you sign up, the less chance you have of reaching your goal and possibly winning a prize(s) in our every-other-week drawings.  We have about 20 people signed up so far, and that's a great start.  For more details, see the post below or stop in to the library.  Keep on reading!

The Summer Reading Program Registration for children as well as adults begins June 22 and the actual reading and logging of hours begins the week after on June 29.  It will run for 6 weeks.  Below is the outline for the Adult Reading Program:

1. You must be 18 years or older
2. Sign up for the program in the library or on our main website
3. Read ANYTHING you want.  A book, a website, an article
4. Record your time in hours on the Summer Reading website(link is on the homepage)
5. After the first two weeks of the program, your name will be automatically entered to win a prize if you've read 10 or more hours
6. After 4 weeks you can win another prize if you've read 20 hours or more
7. If you've logged 30 or more hours at the end of the 6 week program, you will be eligible for our grand prize drawing.
8. Each drawing is separate and is not combined with the previous drawing.
9. There will be multiple prizes for each drawing.
10. For each review you submit, you will get one extra chance at each of the prize drawings.  For example, if you submit three reviews and accomplish the 10 hour reading goal, you will have 4 entries into that particular drawing.  Reviews can be as simple as a few sentences or as detailed as you like.  Reviews are submitted through the same website as where you log hours.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN reading stuff!!

On April 27, we began a "Poem of the Week" at the library.  Each week, a different staff member will pick out a poem for display in the library.  We will also try to incorporate additional information on either the poem or the poet.  Our goal is to make poetry more accessible to all, because we've all experienced that confused and maybe overwhelming feeling of reading a complicated poem.  We will pick poems that are hopefully easy to figure out but maybe a little thought provoking as well.  Check back each week to see the new poem and then let us know what you think about it.
